After the [[Great War]], the diminished influence of the Great Houses gave a number of more
remote colonies the opportunity to strenghten their position by founding a confederation
of planets, independent of the rule of the Great Houses. Each member of the Independent Colonies
would retain its sovereignty but would act in the spirit of economic and military cooperation.

Most of the political framework in the Colonies is dominated by the [[Merchants_Association|Merchants Association]],
who have their headquarters conveniently located on [[planet_Ghant|Ghant]]. The Association dominates
interplanetary transport within the Colonies and likes to kindly remind the other members of how their
appealing discount arrangements could be revised.

With [[planet_Brogha|planet Brogha]] and [[planet_Baden|planet Baden]], the Independent Colonies
have a strong agricultural production base.
